Project Overview
The Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link (TM-CLKL) provides a strategic link connecting the Northwest New Territories (NWNT) to North Lantau, the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Hong Kong Port. The 9 km long TM-CLKL runs between Tuen Mun South and North Lantau, the HZMB Hong Kong Port divides the TM-CLKL into the Southern Connection and the Northern Connection.

The Southern Connection merges with the North Lantau Highway at Tai Ho via a 1.6 km sea viaduct and a 1.9 km land viaduct. The urban bound was opened to traffic on 24 October 2018 to dovetail with the commissioning of the HZMB while the Tung Chung bound was commissioned on 30 November 2018.

Overview of Southern Connection and North Lantau Highway
The Northern Connection consists of a 5 km long dual-carriageway sub-sea tunnel (Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Tunnel) connecting the HZMB Hong Kong Port to Pillar Point in Tuen Mun South. A 2 km long viaduct and a vehicular underpass bring the new link to the local road network.

Project Benefits
The TM-CLKL connects the Northwest New Territories, the HZMB, North Lantau and the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). Upon its full commissioning, the TM-CLKL offers a more direct route of much shorter driving distance between the Northwest New Territories and Lantau. The journey time from Tuen Mun South to the HKIA will be reduced by about 20 minutes.
The TM-CLKL provides an alternative road access between the HKIA and the urban area in addition to the Lantau Link, thus increasing the accessibility and reliability of regional transportation road networks connecting HKIA and HZMB. At the same time, it helps divert the traffic to and from Lantau, thus reducing the traffic load at the North Lantau Highway, Lantau Link and Tuen Mun Highway.
To reduce the cost incurred by the public, public transport operators and transport trades for using the government tunnel and control area concerned, the Government will effect the toll waiver for the new tunnel and the Lantau Link from the day when the Northern Connection is open to traffic.
